Three Floyd’s Brewing Company (Munster, IN)

We decided to forgo the entire Chicago scene (Taste of Chicago looked like a really great time, but going into the city on the fly would have been such a pain.  We felt the same way about going into Goose Island Brewing Company – just too close to the city for this trip.)  Instead, we headed south to Munster, IN for Three Floyd’s Brewing Company.

The minute we walked into Three Floyd’s (which features a fairly new brewpub…they use to serve through a concessions window directly from the brew room), it was important to keep in mind a common tagline on their beers: “It’s Not Normal.”

Several of the walls were solid lime green adjoined by a walls of solid purple, and blow-ups of their funky label artwork lined the inside of the restaurant. Indiana law prohibits beer sales on Sunday, but pint laws at the bar are not as prohibitive, so we were happily there for lunch.  All “pints” were Imperial, so I was thrilled to learn she would pour me half-pints and tasters!

The menu at Three Floyd’s was just as interesting as the beers and the décor.  There were lots of interesting things, but I went with the special (veggie sandwich) after she explained that it was made with grilled vegetables from their garden.  This sandwich could have fed four people!  The grilled foccacia bread was topped with tomato, and the contents were balsamic-vinegar-marinated and grilled slices of zucchini, roasted red pepper, onion and mushrooms.  A big plate of home-cut fries was served with it.  My sandwich couldn’t have been more perfect!

D started with an order of Scotch Eggs (whenever these are found on the menu, his happiness is guaranteed!)  For lunch, he thoroughly enjoyed the ancho chili turkey burger with spring greens, garlicy guacamole and red onions on a spent grain roll.

I started out with 10 oz Pride and Joy (5%ABV; 29 IBU) – an American Mild which is dry hopped; a terrific hop aroma that followed through to the swallow.  The words “mild ale” should not fool the faint at heart.  This brew has some really strong hops characteristic.

With my lunch I chose the Gumballhead (~5% ABV; ~20 IBU)  The label is fashioned over a popular local comic strip character – I’m not sure how it’s connected to the beer. This is pegged as a wheat beer (again, it SOUNDS tame), and the flavor is bold with Amarillo Hops.   It has a nice floral aroma and a crisp flavor that I could easily enjoy all day.

Next I had a half of the Alpha King Pale Ale (6% ABV; 66 IBU) Alpha King is the flagship beer of Three Floyd’s, and it is an American Pale Ale with a strong hoppy flavor and higher alcohol than my first two choices.

I decided to end with a Rabbid Rabbit (8% ABV; 18% IBU), a Saison which is described as “a Franco-Belgian style farmhouse ale”, and generally served in a tulip glass.  I was thrilled she could offer me just a snifter because I really didn’t need anything more to drink, but it was so tasty!  It had spiciness in the nose and which carried through to the swallow.  In the mouth it carried a sweetness and higher alcohol which required sipping.

D had:

  • Deesko (3% ABV; 10 IBU) – a Berliner Weiss was served traditionally in a goblet with the flavored syrup of your choice, so he chose cherry.

  • Robert the Bruce (6.5% ABV; 35 IBU) Scottish-style Ale

  • St. Barniberus (9% ABV; 16 IBU) – a Belgian Trippel with hints of dried plum and semi-sweet chocolate.

We also tasted:

  • Calumet Queen (5% ABV; 20 IBU) – a kolch-style beer; not much to say about this one.

  • Drunk Monk (5.5% ABV) – a Bavarian-style hefeweizen that had a fine mixture of banana and clove plus plenty of alcohol in the nose (banana was most prevalent!  It was hoppier than expected and a nice way to finish off the beverages.
